Common CS 1.6 problems and how to fix them

Black screen on start

Start the game in a window: right-click the shortcut > Properties, add -window at the end of Target. Once in, pick the right resolution in Options > Video and remove -window.

"Could not load library client" or missing client.dll

Usually the antivirus quarantined the file. Restore it from the antivirus, add the game folder to its exclusions and start again.

Lag, choke or loss

Type net_graph 3. If you see choke, lower rate or cl_updaterate. If you see loss, it is the network: try a cable instead of Wi-Fi and stop background downloads.

Maps or sounds will not download

cl_download_ingame 1

If it still fails, leave and rejoin the server. Some servers send big maps slowly.

No servers in the Internet tab

Allow hl.exe through the firewall (Windows asks on first start). Work or school networks may block UDP ports.

The mouse feels strange

Type m_rawinput 1. On older builds, add -noforcemparms -noforcemaccel to the shortcut.

The game closes on Windows 10 or 11

Right-click hl.exe > Properties > Compatibility and tick Disable fullscreen optimizations. Also update the graphics driver.
