How to raise FPS in CS 1.6

CS 1.6 runs on very old computers, but low FPS is often caused by settings, not the graphics card. Try the steps below in order.

1. Use OpenGL

In Options > Video choose Renderer: OpenGL. Software and D3D modes are slower and look worse on almost any card.

2. Set the FPS limit

Open the console with ~ and type:

fps_max 100
developer 0
gl_vsync 0

fps_max 100 is the normal limit for servers. gl_vsync 0 turns off monitor sync, which can lock FPS at 60.

3. Pick a sensible resolution

On laptops with integrated graphics, a lower resolution (for example 1024x768) often doubles FPS. If the picture looks stretched, keep your monitor's aspect ratio (for example 1280x720 on 16:9).

4. Check with net_graph

Type net_graph 3 to see FPS in the corner. If it drops only when many players are around, the limit is the CPU or the connection, not the graphics card.

5. Graphics driver

Install the driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel, not the one Windows adds on its own. On laptops with two graphics cards, set the dedicated card for hl.exe in the NVIDIA or AMD control panel.

6. Close background apps

A browser with many tabs, recording software and overlays (Discord, Steam, Xbox Game Bar) can cost FPS. Close them while playing.
